How to core out a piece of wood (Wood carving)?
I'm trying to make a necklace for myself that I can store things in (an Inro, for those who know what that is) and it's about the size of a Bic Lighter - I even used a bic lighter to trace the shape. I have the base of it done but I need to core it out on the inside, leaving the bottom thick enough to hold.
The only "power tools" I have are three blunt detail carving tools, and a wood burning kit.
I can take pictures if none of this makes sense.

Before you use them is there a way you could just borrow someone else's drill motor and drill a hole in a piece of dowel? That would be pretty simple to do.
Back to your tools. Start burning the center of the wood. Everytime it blackens scrape the burnt wood out using something the size of an icepick. Keep burning and scraping until you reach the desired depth. Hopefully one of your carving tools is thin and pointy.
This is the way Native Americans would sometimes make canoes out of logs. They would burn and then scrape out the charred particles until it was suitable for someone to sit inside of.

Whats the drill here, where do i start?
Ok, so this is a spur the moment question.
I've always thought the drums were the instrument that made the song, i've always said that if i learn an instrument, that it'll be the drums. And that time has come.
I know the basics, like the toms, the crash and floor cymbal, the snare and base drum, and their placement. But not much more than that. So where do i start, whats the path to take to becoming a drummer? Just read up first, or should i work on getting a kit? should i pick out an already made one, or should i piece it together myself? teacher or experiment?
